Salinas offers the charm and friendliness of a small town - rich in culture and history. Many of the historic buildings still stand, including the Jose Estubio Boronda Adobe, a state historic landmark, founded in 1844.

Built in 1844 by Boronda on the northeast corner of his 2,230-acre Rancho Rinconada del Sanjon, it is an “unflawed fragment of Spanish California, an actual environment in which (Monterey County) people lived, slept, and ate.”

Also on the site is the official archive of Monterey County, 1897 Laguanita School House John Steinbeck wrote about in The Red Pony.

Next to the art deco style Amtrak Station is the Railway Express Agency Building, run by the Monterey-Salinas Valley Railroad Association, a must-see for any visitor. Right next door is Salinas’ first mayors home, the beautifully restored Historic Harvey House. Tours available by appointment.Art Deco Train Station in Salinas Harvey House in Background
