Salinas offers the charm and friendliness of a small
town -
rich in culture and history. Many of the historic buildings still
stand, including the Jose Estubio Boronda Adobe, a state historic
landmark, founded in 1844.
Built in 1844 by Boronda on the northeast corner of his 2,230-acre
Rancho Rinconada del Sanjon, it is an “unflawed fragment of Spanish
California, an actual environment in which (Monterey County) people
lived, slept, and ate.”
Also on the site is the official archive of Monterey County, 1897
Laguanita School House John Steinbeck wrote about in The Red Pony.
Next to the art deco style Amtrak Station is the Railway Express Agency
Building, run by the Monterey-Salinas Valley Railroad Association, a
must-see for any visitor. Right next door is Salinas’ first mayors
home, the beautifully restored Historic Harvey House. Tours available
by appointment.
Just two blocks away sits the boyhood home of John Steinbeck, the
prize-winning author of books such as the Grapes of Wrath,
and Cannery
Row. Join the volunteers of the Valley Guild for a delicious
lunch
or afternoon tea - reservations recommended! The John Steinbeck House
is on the National Historic Register.
A short walk down Central Avenue brings you to quaint Oldtown Salinas,
featuring antiques, many interesting shops and boutiques,
coffee houses, fabulous restaurants, and wine tasting, as well as live
theater and cinema. The newly refurbished Fox Theater, an art deco
dream, offers live music and comedy shows.
The map below may be downloaded and printed for use. A
self-guided walking tour map of the historic area is available in most
Oldtown locations and the
